Le Canon was difficult to get a reservation at! No online reservations accepted so I kept calling during the day even though they were closed and there was no voicemail. But then they called back! So they must have seen all my calls! We got a reservation for when they opened at 7:15pm.
We got to see their wine cave when K described her wine preferences our waiter brought over three bottles to choose from.

We chose the middle wine – a grape (Poulsard) from Jura that we had never heard of. It was very light, garnet color with flavours I couldn’t quite identify. But as the wine opened up, there were berry flavours and even some earth notes. I suspect that if it had been decanted and left for a little while it would have been even better!

We chatgpted the menu and got a decent translation which was very helpful given all the different dishes that show up on menus in France! We shared a croquette to start and inside were octopus and a local pork. The sause with it was gribiche. I had to look that up and it is cold, mustardy egg-based sauce with capers, cornichons and herbs. Excellent. K decided on having a starter-sized zucchini flowers as her main. It had chanterelle mushrooms from the hills around Nice. D had the Monkfish and it came with fregola which is a toasted Sardinian pasta.

Dessert was Rhubarb for D and Pavlova for K. The Rhubarb tart had an almond base and it came with rhubarb gelato. Excellent. The pavlova came with cherries and a sheep’s milk yogurt.

The kitchen looked really small but the restaurant itself was small as well. D thanked the chef and but didn’t try to get a picture of him.
What will be memorable for our last meal in Nice was another diner that came and went during our meal. He didn’t like the cooking! I think he got his back up at the slow service – he ordered a glass of wine and then waited and then asked someone else complaining he had been waiting too long. He sent back his fish to be cooked more then made a little huff-and-puff scene at the end paying the bill. He tried to walk out with the water bottle but the waiter chased him down and rolled his eyes when he came back in. He had an Australian accent so we apologized on behalf of Australia.
